Sharpshooting Ekenasio powers New Zealand to thrilling victory

New Zealand have won their second match of the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series with an exciting two-point victory over Malawi.

The Fast5 Ferns ensured they will play off for a bronze medal after a close last quarter where they outscored Malawi 4-2 to claim a 29-27 win.

Malawi got off to a hot start, racing to a 6-3 lead before a late three-point shot to Ameliaranne Ekenasio tied the scores heading into New Zealand’s power play quarter.

New Zealand squandered their opportunity to get ahead with their powerplay shooting, 3/9, to go into half time just five points ahead with Malawi’s power play to come in the third term.

Malawi looked to have got their nose in front during their power play, outscoring New Zealand 14-6 before another late three-point shot to Ekenasio tied the scores at the final break.

“Knowing it was all tied up we kind of went into that last quarter as if it was the beginning of a new game, so that nil-all kind of scenario so that that way we went back to the beginning, putting everything else that happened behind us and it was time to start fresh, and that kind of regenerates your body and your mind, as if you’re starting a new game,” Storm Purvis said of her side’s mindset heading into the final term.

A frantic final quarter saw both sides struggle to score due to defensive pressure, however it was New Zealand who were able to pull ahead by two points and claim victory.

They will now face Australia in the bronze medal match while Malawi will face South Africa in the playoff for fifth and sixth place.

“Even though we have lost that game, we have played well. Even though they have won, we’re not worried much because they were the champions,” Malawi captain Caroline Mtukele said of her side’s performance.
