Shanice Beckford stars in Jamaica’s Grand Final warm-up win against England

Jamaica has defeated England in the final regular-tournament game of the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series.

In a preview of tonight’s grand final, Jamaican shooter Shanice Beckford made five three-point shots in the second half to guide her side to victory 47-38.

“Well, going into the final it’s just going back to square one. So, we’re not going say that we have the finals. We’re just going out there to put everything on court and hopefully come out with a win, because we’re going play hard and play hard for the win,” said Adean Thomas, on what Jamaica needs to do to beat England ahead of the grand final.

With both teams not wanting to show all their cards before tonight’s decider, attacking netball dominated the first quarter with English shooter Rachel Dunn hitting two long-range threes to give her side a two-point lead at the break.

England’s power play was in effect going into the second. Dynamic duo Jo Harten and Helen Housby spent much more time in attack after spending the majority of the first on the bench, potentially a move from coach Tania Oust to keep her two best attackers fresh and ready to go in the final.

“You do have to go for them cause we were quite a few points down at that moment in time and you’re not really going to score it with ones and twos so you just have to go for it really,’ said England’s Rachel Dunn, on using the powerplay quarter to their advantage.

The third quarter belonged to Beckford who, with Jamaica’s power play in effect, made four of her three-point shots in the quarter, which aided in her side scoring 30 goals for the quarter.

With a 42-32 lead going into the last, England goal-keeper Geva Mentor battled hard to quell the influence of one of the tournament’s leading shooters Jhaniele Fowler-Reid. But it was Beckford who again stood up and added one more three-point shot to her tally and finished the game with a 100 per cent shot rate from long range, something she will be aiming to repeat in the final.

Jamaica now enter the Grand Final as the home team after finishing the tournament on top and undefeated while England will be looking to turn the result around in tonight’s 7:25pm decider.
