Malawi scores dream ending

Malawi have put on a spirited performance to secure their highest ever finish in a Fast5 Netball World Series, with a dramatic win against England in the third place playoff.

On the back of some strong shooting and smart attacking play Malawi were able to claim the victory 35-32.

Goal shooter Mwai Kumwenda lead the way for Malawi inside a tight opening six minutes, shooting 8 goals from 9 attempts to guide her side to a three point lead at quarter-time.

Malawi produced yet another strong quarter moving the ball at pace to spread the English defence, which helped them extend their lead to seven points at half time.

Thanks to 16 points in the third quarter by Joanne Harten, England took a five-point lead into the final change.

In a final quarter that threatened to go either way, the African nation rallied late to all but announce their arrival on the world stage.

Malawian shooting star Mwai Kumwenda was over the moon with the result.

We are so excited to be number three, weve had a long time losing so its good for us. I was excited for me and the girls, said Kumwenda.

Despite the result English defender Geva Mentor was full of praise for the Fast5 World Series.

This competition has been so much fun and theres only three of us on the team that have actually played this style of netball before so a big learning curve for all of us but Ive really enjoyed coming back here to Melbourne because you guys have put on a great show and its been a really awesome week,” said Mentor.

Malawi are sure to be over the moon with the result meanwhile England will be left ruing their missed opportunities during the match.
