Malawi claim maiden win over Jamaica in dominant display

End-to-end dominance from Malawi lead them to their first ever Fast5 win over Jamaica and first win of the tournament, thanks largely to 16 goals from 20 attempts shot by Mwai Kumwenda.

Jamaica finish Day 1 of the tournament without a win after going down 46-12 in their final match of the day and will be looking for stronger performances tomorrow against New Zealand and England.

Malawi started strong in the first quarter, dominating both ends of the court, holding Jamaica scoreless and taking a 6-0 lead at quarter time.

Jamaica continued to struggle under the intense pressure from the Malawians. Mwai Kumwenda shot eight goals from 10 attempts to lead the charge for Malawi, extending their lead to nine points, with an 11-2 score line at for the half.

Malawi managed to keep Jamaica in check during their power play, keeping the Jamaicans to eight points to hold an eight point advantage heading into the final quarter, with a power play still in hand.

They used their power play to punish a tired Jamaican team, scoring 28 points with the advantage to blow the score out to a 46-12 win.

Malawian shooter Mwai Kumwenda reflected on her side’s desire to finish off the day with a win.

“We lost a couple of games so we decided this game we needed to work hard and  fight for every ball.  We needed to go out knowing we don’t have a lot of time as the game can change quickly, so mix it up and go for the long shots. Our coach asked us to fight hard and give everything,” said Kumwenda.

It was the first win of the tournament for Malawi, who were firing on all cylinders, to set a new team record for most points in a Fast5 game to  put away Jamaica in both teams final game of Day 1.
