Jamaica secure Fast5 Grand Final berth after victory over reigning champions

New Zealand’s defence of their 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series title is over after a loss to Jamaica in Sunday’s third game.

Jamaica extended their undefeated run with a 30-23 victory over the Kiwis to secure a place in the Grand Final against England.

In a must-win game for New Zealand after two losses on opening day, the defence duo of Kayla Cullen and Temalisi Fakahokotau were drawn to one of the tournament’s leading scorers in Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, which allowed dangerous shooter Shanice Beckford more attempts at goal and gave Jamaica a one-point advantage at the break.

New Zealand took their power play in the second quarter but a strong team defence from the Jamaicans allowed Fowler-Reid to break free and make three two-point shots for the quarter and hold the Kiwis to a four-goal quarter.

“[Our strategy was] basically to prevent them from shooting the long bombs, the twos and the threes because we recognise that they’re a very good shooting team where twos and threes are our concern. So, for the power play we were just wanting to give them ones, prevent them from getting the twos and if anything get all the rebounds. I think that defence-wise we executed that today,” Jamaica’s Vangelee Williams said of her team’s defensive effort.

With a 10-goal lead going into the third and Jamaica’s power play in effect, New Zealand’s efforts to trim the margin were thwarted by Malysha Kelly and Vangelee Williams as both defenders’ work-rate and intensity stood tall on the court.

With the game all but decided, the Kiwis could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas but their fight and spirit was on show with shooting trio Ameliaanne Ekenasio, Jamie Hume and Monica Falkner all hitting long range shots when on the court.

Jamaica will now face England in their final tournament game before both teams hit the court at 7:25pm to decide the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series champion while New Zealand next face Malawi at 3:15pm.
