Jamaica extend undefeated run with victory over Malawi

Jamaica has continued their strong form in the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series with a hard-fought victory over Malawi.

Jamaica remain undefeated with the 31-24 victory while Malawi finish Day One of the tournament without a win.

In a game that featured fast-free flowing netball, Malawi centre Takondwa Lwazi started strong before Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid continued her impressive form and finished the first with a two-point goal on the buzzer.

With Fowler-Reid spending the second term on the bench, Malawi’s work rate picked up throughout the quarter but their hard work down the court wasn’t capitalised on under the hoop with Jamaica leading 12-10 at the half.

Malawi opted to use their power play in the third but it was Jamaica’s Shanice Beckford who dominated the quarter, scoring four two-point shots.

With Malawi down by one and Jamaica’s power play in effect in the last quarter, both sides were quick to move the ball but the effort and work-rate of Vangelee Williams in GD for the Jamaicans stood out and allowed her side to finish the day undefeated and brimming with confidence heading into the final day of play on Sunday.

“If I should chose I would say Vangelee Williams, I think she really works out and is good at the defending and took a lot of intercepts for us. I think she stands out the most,” Shanice Beckford responded when asked about her player of the match.

While Malawai’s Takonda Lwazi was impressed with the performance of Fowler-Reid, she said: “We tried but unfortunately we have lost so we have accepted it because each day, it’s a new game to everyone. So you can say that, although our day is done, but we’ll try our best tomorrow so we can catch up for the mistakes we have done today.’

JAMAICA (31) defeated MALAWI (24)
