Jamaica defeat Australia in a nail-biting Fast5 contest

Jamaica has started their Fast5 campaign with back-to-back victories after overcoming Australia in a nail-biter.

Jamaica walked away victors 26-23 with a strong four-quarter defence showing allowing Jhaniele Fowler-Reid to be a presence under the hoop.

“It was. I wouldn’t say it was a steal, we played for it. So yeah, we won the game. We played really good out there and it was a massive game because Australia gave their best and we did as well, and we came out victorious and that’s really good.” Jhaniele Fowler-Reid.

Jamaica came out of the blocks early, with Shanice Beckford opening their account with a two-point goal before Gretel Tippett hit consecutive two-pointers to continue her strong form from Game 1.

The Australians again used the second quarter as their power play but unlike their first game, were unable to take full advantage of the assist with both sides tied on 10 points apiece at the half.

“Look, I think our intensity was down. Jamaica came out really hard and put out a good performance. We didn’t probably perform well enough in our power play quarter and that really hurt us. We actually defended well in their power play but yeah look we probably left it a little bit too late.” Australia’s Kate Moloney.

Fowler-Reid took just 14 seconds in the third to get the Jamaicans going with their defensive mindsight forcing the host country into a number of uncharacteristic errors yet with both sides only scoring eight points, the match was still tied going into the last quarter.

The match came down to the final seconds in the last quarter with a vital steel from Jamaican centre Paula Thompson, allowing her side to convert before Tegan Philip missed a three-point chance to tie the game for the Aussies.
