England secure spot in third place playoff with victory over Jamaica

England have booked a spot in the third place playoff against Malawi with a comfortable 13 point win over Jamaica.

A dominant second and third quarter from Joanne Harten set up the 32-19 win for England.

The shooting from both sides was on song early, with the two teams shooting a combined 15 goals from 19 attempts as England took a 9-8 lead at the first break.

Shantal Slater was particularly accurate for Jamaica, missing just one shot in the first term, with Jamaica focusing on getting the close shots on the board.

“I think that was our key thing, just to get the ball in, get the ones and not taking the long shots, just keeping the scoreboard ticking. And that worked in the first half but we didn’t capitalise on that in the second half,” said Jamaican shooter Vanessa Walker.

Joanne Harten took control of the game in the second quarter for England, scoring eight of her sides nine points to give them a six point lead at half time.

Harten continued her dominance during England’s power play, scoring all of her side’s 10 points to extend their lead to 13 heading into the final term.

Slater got Jamaica off to a great start during their power play, scoring the first four points, however it wasn’t enough as England ran away 13 point victors.

England defender Ama Agbeze reflected on England’s ability to capitalise on their power play compared to Jamaica’s close range goal tactic.

“I don’t know why they’re not shooting six point shots, if they put me in there, I’d be shooting six point shots, having a go. But I do think that we just had to stay in the game and stay ahead and that’s what we did so I was happy,” said Agbeze.

The win means England will play off against Malawi for third place while Jamaica will face South Africa in their final game of the tournament.
