Australia squeeze past inaccurate Malawi in Fast5 Opener

Australia has begun their Fast5 campaign with a one-point win over Malawi, in a thrilling match to open the Fast5 World Series.

The home side were calmer and more accurate with the ball, and were fortunate that star Malawi shooter Mwai Kumwenda only made nine of her 22 attempts at goal.

Australia came out of the blocks hot, shooting well early to get out to a 7-3 advantage at the first break on the back of some strong shooting from Erin Bell.

Malawi matched Australia’s energy in the second quarter, holding on to keep the margin to four, Australia went into the major break up 12-8.

The visitors took advantage of their power play in the third quarter, including a double 3 point supershot from Mwai Kumwenda, drawing to within two, with Australia leading 20-18 going into the final quarter.

According to captain Susan Pettitt, the home side failed to take advantage of their power play. They were outscored 5-4 in the final term, but held on to their slender lead to win by one point.

“We didn’t have a very good second half, the power play got in our head a little bit. We played their power play really well but not ours,” said Pettitt.

“Next game we will look at relaxing a little bit, just giving the ball and enjoying being out there a bit more especially during the power play quarter,” she said.

Australia will take on Jamaica in their next game, while Malawi will play England.
