Australia defeat New Zealand in nail-biter

Australia have beaten New Zealand in the Fast5 format of the game for the first time since 2011, with a three-point victory.

In what was widely regarded as a Grand Final preview, it was Australia who took home bragging rights with a 32-29 win.

Australia made the most of their chances early, shooting with 71 per cent accuracy on their way to a 7-4 quarter time lead.

They continued their dominance in the second quarter, attempting 11 shots to New Zealand’s five and took a seven point lead into half time.

Taking complete advantage of the power play, three six-point shots from Maria Tutaia saw New Zealand storm away to a seven point lead heading into the final quarter.

Australia were able to restrict New Zealand to just two points in the last term while using their power play to score 12 of their own points to run away with the match.

New Zealand shooter Maria Tutaia expressed that her team are still getting used to the Fast5 format.

“Obviously just one person to offload to, some of the girls are still getting used to it. There is so much space, so much you can use within the circle, which gives free range for everyone to have a jam and see what they can create,” said Tutaia.

Shooter Caitlin Thwaites thanked the Melbourne crowd for helping get the Australians over the line.

“It’s pretty awesome, and it’s great to see so many people come out and actually embrace it,” said Thwaites.

Australia will face England tomorrow morning while New Zealand will face Jamaica.
